Meet Tyler Johnson, Graduate Student Therapist

Life is complex, and Tyler believes that everyone deserves a dedicated space to navigate the "hard things" without fear of judgment. As a Graduate Student Therapist from Avila University practicing at Liz Davis Therapy Group, his approach is grounded in the idea that you have permission to be your most genuine, authentic self—even when you aren't alone. Tyler views the therapeutic relationship as a healing force in itself, where honesty and humor serve as vital tools for growth and connection.

Tyler’s Approach to Therapy - What to Expect

When you walk through the door for your first session with Tyler, his primary goal is for you to feel safe, comfortable, and trusted. He understands that starting therapy can be a big step, so he focuses on creating an environment where you have permission to be your genuine, authentic self from the very beginning.

Because Tyler views therapy as a collaboration, your first few sessions are about defining what your unique process will look like. He doesn't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, he works with you to determine your needs:

  • Processing and Discovery: For some, sessions may focus on "talking it out"—exploring past traumas, childhood experiences, or current relationship dynamics.

  • Tools and Education: For others, therapy might involve more tangible "homework," setting specific goals, or learning about how the brain works.

  • Building the Puzzle: Tyler sees himself as someone who provides the "building pieces" to help you naturally piece together insights and solutions for your own life.

Ultimately, Tyler wants you to leave the room feeling empowered to take the "leading role" in your life, just as you do in your therapy sessions.

Who Tyler Works Best With

Tyler is a natural fit for adults seeking a therapist who is as approachable as they are professional. While he has an extensive background in early childhood development, his primary clinical focus is supporting adults and couples as they navigate the complexities of identity and modern life.

  • LGBTQ+ Identity & Development: Tyler is deeply committed to supporting clients who are exploring aspects of their identity. He provides a safe, affirming space to process identity development, navigate relationships, and address the unique social and emotional stressors that can accompany life within the LGBTQ+ community.

  • Adults Seeking the "Authentic Self": He is an excellent match for those who feel "buttoned up" by life’s demands and want to rediscover their creativity, humor, and personal freedom.

  • Survivors of Trauma: Having worked in high-crisis environments and trauma-informed organizations, Tyler provides a steady, safe presence for adults processing multiple or complex traumas.

  • Collaborative Partners: He works best with clients who want to take the "leading role" in their healing, providing the "building blocks" while you piece together your own puzzle.

  • Children & Families: Tyler also offers support for children (ages 3+) and their caregivers, utilizing play therapy to help little ones express what they cannot yet put into words.

Tyler’s Areas of Focus

Tyler’s clinical work is shaped by his background in high-crisis environments and a deep respect for individual autonomy. He specializes in:

  • Identity & LGBTQ+ Affirming Care: Supporting individuals through the coming out process, gender identity exploration, and relationship dynamics.

  • Trauma Intervention: Providing a stable, trauma-informed presence for those who have experienced complex traumatic events.

  • Anxiety & Emotional Regulation: Teaching clients "how their brain works" to help manage difficult emotions.

  • Self-Esteem & Inner Child Work: Helping adults move past rigid expectations to rediscover their most authentic selves.

  • Foster Care & Adoption: Supporting both children and caregivers navigating the unique challenges of the foster care system.

The Person Outside the Therapy Room

If you run into Tyler outside of the office, he’s likely embracing the vibrant energy of the Waldo neighborhood, where he has lived since 2020. A true Kansas City native, he grew up in Lee’s Summit as the oldest of five siblings—a role that quietly planted the seeds for his career in helping others.

Tyler is someone who deeply values authenticity and believes life is better when you have "permission to be you," whether that means being serious or completely silly. To recharge, he leans into a few of his favorite things:

  • A Horror Aficionado: Tyler is a massive fan of the scary movie genre. While he appreciates the classics, he is particularly fond of modern horror and considers himself a true devotee of the genre.

  • A Proud Dog Dad: His home is a busy one, shared with his husband and two dogs: Louie and Lenny. He jokingly refers to Lenny and Louie as the true loves of his life.

  • A Lifelong Learner & Traveler: He recently secured his passport and is counting down the days until August, when he will head to Scotland for his first major international adventure.

  • A Fan of Good Food: If you ask for a recommendation, he’ll likely point you toward his favorite: Chinese or any style of Asian cuisine.

Whether he’s spending time with his many nieces and nephews or getting lost in a good book, Tyler carries a playful, genuine energy that reminds everyone around him that it’s okay to slow down and just be human.
