New to Therapy?

Here’s What to Expect

What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session.

01 — Before Your First Appointment.

  • First thing is to click the Schedule an Appointment button. From there, you can pick a day and time that works for you. I will email you to confirm the appointment.

  • Then, I will add you into Simple Practice, the secure scheduling software I use for scheduling, billing, and storing paperwork. Simple Practice will email you the intake paperwork that you should complete online prior to our first session. It takes a bit of time, but it saves more time in session to just get to know each other instead of doing boring paperwork.

  • Add the appointment to your personal calendar and get excited! You’ll also receive a text and email reminder from Simple Practice two days prior to your appointment, just in case you’re as forgetful as I am.

02 — Where to Go

  • You’ll arrive at Moss and Main Therapy Group, located at 4049 Central St, Kansas City, MO 64111. It’s a big yellow building that looks like a house, with a white wraparound porch. Parking is on the street in front of the building, or in the parking lot to the left with the chain fence around it..

  • Enter in the front door, walk straight through the entryway, and you’ll see a waiting room with a couch and chairs in the entryway. Feel free to have a seat and get comfortable. I’ll come get you at our appointment time.

  • If you need it, the restroom is up the stairs when you walk in. You will first take a left at the top of the stairs, and then it’s the second door on the right. A sign says “Powder Room” outside, and the door is always open unless occupied.

03 — In Our First Appointment

  • Since your intake paperwork will already be completed online prior to the appointment, I’ll just spend about 10 minutes going over the highlights of the paperwork and answering any questions you may have about me, therapy, fees/scheduling, or anything else.

  • I will then ask you some questions about what brings you to therapy. This is your turn to talk, and I’ll just listen.

  • I may ask you some questions to better understand your background and history. This is the first step to getting to know you, and you can also get to know my style as well. I may ask about your family, your past, or what brings you to therapy now. There are no wrong answers. Just relax and be yourself!

  • I’ll check in with you in the last ten minutes of the session to see what you think about the first session, and see how you’re feeling. I’ll ask if you think we’re a good fit. If so, we can continue to work together and schedule your next appointment. Your card will be automatically charged in Simple Practice at the end of the day at midnight.

  • If you’re not so sure that I’m the best person to help you, that is totally ok too! You are welcome to let me know that! I will email you within a week with at least one referral for another highly qualified therapist who may be a better fit for you. I only refer therapists I know and trust in their work.

04 — After Your First Appointment

  • Be gentle with yourself. Therapy can be cathartic, but it can also take a lot out of you emotionally. If possible, give yourself time and space after our session to process the experience on your own or with a safe person.

  • If you have decided we are a good fit, email/text me or access your Simple Practice Client Portal online to schedule another appointment with me. I’d love to see you again and continue the healing journey.

  • If you have decided we are not a good fit, you’ll receive an email from me within a week with at least one referral name for another qualified therapist.
