Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in Kansas City, MO
Fast, Lasting Healing from Trauma & PTSD in as few as 1 to 5 sessions without having to relive or talk through every detail.
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, evidence-based psychotherapy that uses soothing back-and-forth eye movements to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories, painful emotions, and distressing physical sensations.
Developed as an evolution of traditional trauma modalities, ART combines voluntary eye movements with a technique called Image Rescripting. This process changes how memories are stored in your brain. The goal is not to erase your past, but to remove the overwhelming physical distress, panic, and emotional weight attached to it.
"Keep the Knowledge, Lose the Pain"
You will always remember the facts of what happened, but your body no longer reacts with fear, anxiety, or hypervigilance.
How ART Works in Your Brain and Body
In essence, EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories by using bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of guided eye movements. This process allows your mind to integrate these memories in a more adaptive way, reducing their emotional charge and alleviating the associated symptoms.
How ART Works in Your Brain and Body
When you experience a traumatic event, your brain can store that memory along with the original sensory details, fear, and fight-or-flight response. Years later, a trigger can bring those physical reactions rushing back as if the event were happening all over again.
ART targets this exact reaction by guiding your brain through a precise process:
Somatic Down-Regulation: Guided eye movements help lower your heart rate and calm your nervous system while you briefly focus on a painful memory.
Voluntary Memory Rescripting: Under guidance from your therapist, you replace the distressing mental imagery of the trauma with neutral or positive images of your choice.
Neurological Rewiring: The brain updates the memory file. When you recall the event in the future, you remember the facts, but your body remains calm and grounded.
You Do Not Have to Talk About the Details: You do not need to speak your traumatic memories out loud to your therapist. Most of the memory work takes place internally inside your mind, protecting your privacy and comfort.
No Homework or Exposure Assignments: Unlike traditional prolonged exposure therapies, ART requires no written journaling, recording review, or homework between sessions.
Exceptional Efficiency: Because of how rapidly ART processes visual images and bodily sensations, many clients experience profound emotional relief in as few as one to two sessions.
Who Can ART Help?
While Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is widely recognized as a primary treatment for trauma, its unique ability to rapidly reprogram how the brain stores distressing visual imagery and somatic stress makes it effective across a broad spectrum of mental health challenges.
When distressing experiences or persistent mental blocks keep your nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight, ART offers a direct path toward emotional regulation and relief.
Trauma, Stress, and Anxiety Conditions
ART helps clear the intrusive imagery, physical panic, and physiological alarm responses associated with acute and chronic stress.
Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and CPTSD: Resolve single-event trauma or complex relational trauma without having to detail the experience out loud.
Anxiety and Panic Attacks: De-escalate the sudden physiological spikes and lingering fear that trigger panic episodes.
Phobias: Neutralize extreme, irrational fear reactions tied to specific objects, places, or scenarios.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Reduce the distressing mental imagery and emotional urgency driving repetitive behaviors.
Job-Related Stress: Release professional burnout, high-stakes pressure, and workplace-induced distress.
Relational and Identity Challenges
Unresolved emotional wounds often show up in how we view ourselves and connect with others. ART helps break negative relational cycles at the root.
Victimization and Sexual Abuse: Process deep trauma surrounding past violations to restore bodily autonomy and safety.
Victimization and Poor Self-Image: Shift entrenched, critical self-beliefs rooted in past mistreatment or rejection.
Relationship Issues and Infidelity: Reprocess the acute shock, visual triggers, and betrayal trauma associated with relationship crises.
Family Issues and Codependency: Establish internal safety so you can step out of enmeshed or reactive family dynamics.
Grief: Process complex or traumatic loss so you can honor your grief without feeling consumed by the pain.
Performance, Somatic, and Behavioral Health
By addressing how the nervous system holds onto tension and fear, ART supports physical well-being and behavioral change.
Performance Anxiety: Clear self-doubt and fear of failure in sports, public speaking, academic pursuits, or professional roles.
Addictions and Substance Abuse: Target and desensitize the vivid mental imagery and emotional triggers that fuel cravings.
Eating Disorders: Reprocess distorted body image perceptions and the underlying emotional pain linked to disordered eating patterns.
Pain Management: Reduce the emotional and somatic amplification of chronic physical pain held in the body.
Dyslexia Anxiety: Calms the anticipatory fear, shame, and stress associated with reading and learning challenges.
Memory Enhancement: Clear internal mental clutter and traumatic memories to improve focus, cognitive clarity, and healthy recall.
