Meet Izzy Carranza, Graduate Student Therapist
I see clients in person and online!
I believe that therapy is most effective when it is built on a genuine connection between two "healing souls." My approach is rooted in warmth, curiosity, and nonjudgment, and I strive to create a space where you feel safe enough to drop the "front" or the "mask" we so often have to wear in the outside world. To me, you are the expert on your own life; I am simply here to practice intuitively alongside you, knowing when to hold space in silence and when to gently "dig" a little deeper to help you uncover your truth.
Whether we are working through inner-child healing, navigating the complexities of identity and sexuality, or addressing the unique challenges of motherhood and marriage, I believe in meeting you exactly where you are. I am currently finishing my master’s degree in Counseling and am passionate about creating an environment where you feel seen, heard, and accepted exactly as you are.
I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I like to create a "cocktail" of therapeutic tools—often incorporating solution-focused techniques and DBT—to help you find tangible ways to feel a little lighter after every session. I tend to look at life through a "funny-but-serious" lens, and I’m not afraid to use humor to help navigate the heavier parts of your journey.
Together, we’ll explore what matters most to you and find the tools and insight that help you move forward.
Izzy’s Specialties
Identity & Self-Discovery
I am passionate about working with individuals who feel "lost" within their own lives or who have spent years masking their true personalities to fit into societal or family expectations. Together, we work to peel back those layers and rediscover your authentic self.
Healing the Inner Child
Many of us grew up in environments where we had to be the "adult" or the mediator far too soon. I specialize in helping clients reconnect with and heal their inner child by giving space to the parts of you that never got to fully experience being a child or a teenager.
Women’s Issues
I provide a supportive space for women navigating the heavy lifting of modern life. From the complexities of marriage and motherhood to the unique pressures of living within patriarchal structures, I help women reclaim their agency and find balance.
Sexuality & Intimacy
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I offer a deeply affirming and non-judgmental space for those exploring their sexuality or navigating the coming-out process. I also work with couples to improve intimacy, explore sexual desires, and address the shame often associated with fetishes or the impact of pornography.
Emotional Literacy
Finding the words for how we feel can be the hardest part of the journey. I help clients—especially those from backgrounds where emotions were discouraged—build the vocabulary to identify and process complex feelings like rage, disgust, and deep-seated sadness.
Therapeutic Modalities
The Relational Alliance I believe the relationship between therapist and client is the primary vehicle for change. I prioritize building a strong, authentic alliance where you are seen and supported, adapting my style to be either a quiet observer or an active conversationalist depending on what you need in the moment.
Solution-Focused Therapy While we will certainly explore the "why" behind your experiences, I also want you to leave the room feeling "lighter." I incorporate solution-based techniques to help us identify tangible goals and actionable steps you can take to see real progress in your daily life.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) For clients navigating intense emotional cycles or specific diagnoses like Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder, I utilize DBT. This approach provides a practical framework for developing mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation.
Eclectic & Intuitive Approach I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all manual. My practice is a "cocktail" of modalities tailored specifically to you. I work intuitively, reading the room to provide the right balance of gentle challenge and deep empathy.
Who I work with best
I am honored to work with a diverse range of individuals and couples, providing a space where your unique identity and life stage are celebrated.
Individuals I work with adults who are navigating the complexities of modern life. Whether you are dealing with a specific diagnosis, feeling "stuck" in your current season, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of who you are.
Women & Mothers I have a deep passion for supporting women and mothers. I understand the "invisible load" that many women carry and offer a space to process the shifts in identity that come with marriage, parenthood, and navigating societal expectations.
The LGBTQ+ Community As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am dedicated to providing a safe, affirming, and celebratory space for Queer folks in KCMO. Whether you are in the process of coming out, questioning your identity, or seeking a therapist who truly understands your lived experience, I am here for you.
Couples & Partnerships I work with couples who are looking to deepen their connection or navigate challenging transitions. I am particularly skilled in helping partners discuss intimacy, sexual health, and desire in a way that is open, honest, and free of shame.
Those Navigating Complex Family Dynamics I enjoy working with individuals who are unlearning old patterns from their upbringing. If you grew up in a traditional household where emotions weren't discussed, or if you were the "mediator" in your family, we can work together to establish healthy boundaries and find your own voice.
Para la Comunidad: Therapy for the Latino Community
LGBTQ+ Affirming Care
I believe that therapy should be a place where you can be your most authentic self without the need for explanation or defense. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the unique courage it takes to navigate a world that doesn’t always feel built for us. Whether you are currently in the process of coming out, exploring the fluid nature of your identity, or simply looking for a therapist who "gets it," I offer a celebratory and safe space for you.
My approach to LGBTQ+ care includes:
Identity & Sexuality Exploration: Providing a non-judgmental environment to explore questioning, coming out, and the evolving nature of your identity across the lifespan.
Navigating Family & Tradition: As someone who has navigated my own journey through traditional cultural and family expectations, I am passionate about helping others find the balance between their heritage and their truth.
Intimacy & Relationships: Supporting individuals and couples in navigating queer relationships, sexual health, and the unique dynamics of LGBTQ+ partnerships.
Healing from Shame: Working through the internal and external "masks" we often wear to survive, and moving toward a life where you can feel whole and proud.
In this room, your identity is not a "problem to be solved." It is a vital part of who you are, and it is something we will honor together.
Religious Trauma & Deconstruction
I provide a soft landing for those navigating the painful process of unlearning harmful religious narratives. Whether you are currently questioning your faith, distancing yourself from a high-control religious environment, or working through the "spiritual shorthand" that once defined your world, I am here to help you reclaim your autonomy.
Religious trauma can leave you feeling isolated, guilty, or disconnected from your own body and desires. Together, we will hold space for the anger, grief, and confusion that often accompany deconstruction. My goal is to help you build a new foundation—one rooted in your own values and authentic identity rather than fear or external expectation. We will work to untangle your worth from your performance and rediscover who you are outside of the pews.
Izzy Outside of the Therapy Room
When I’m not in the therapy room, I am usually leaning into the beautiful, busy chaos of life as a wife and a mother. I am a self-described "doer" who feels most fulfilled when I am active and productive; for me, being helpful to others is where I find my greatest joy. While my husband often reminds me to find moments for rest, I truly thrive in this "season" of life where I get to be deeply involved in my family and my work.
When I do find those rare moments of downtime, I love to keep it simple. You might find me:
Deep-Diving into Documentaries: I have a particular fascination with nature and wildlife—don’t be surprised if I’ve spent my evening watching a documentary on crocodiles!
Bonding Over Harry Potter: I am a huge fan of the Wizarding World, a passion I’ve loved passing down to my children. There is nothing quite like a Harry Potter marathon to help me reset and feel okay.
Embracing Family Life: Whether we are exploring together or just relaxing at home, my family is my world.
Ready to Begin?
I would be honored to walk alongside you as you navigate your path toward healing and self-discovery. Whether you are looking to process the past, manage the present, or build a more authentic future, I am here to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for us to do the work together.
