A Little About Liz.

Hey, I’m Liz! My awareness of a spiritual dimension of life started pretty early. I grew up raised in the Catholic church. My mom is Kenyan, a country that was colonized by the British resulting in our traditional belief systems being erased and replaced by Christianity. I’ve had to do my own research to learn more about my Kenyan ancestral belief system. My father is of the Muskogee Creek-Seminole Indigenous tribe, originating in what is now Florida, and displaced to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. Again, our Indigenous beliefs were eradicated and replaced by Christianity.

Growing up, I attended Catholic school from preschool through high school and was a devout Christian until about age twelve. I had done all the things—praying every day, saying rosaries, listening to Christian music, reading the Bible every night—and yet, I felt nothing. No authentic connection or relationship to God. At this point, I started asking questions at school. I’d ask my teachers if people of other faith traditions were going to hell if they weren’t baptized. Needless to say, I was not met with a satisfactory answer. As a bright kid who loved to read, that was about the point where I started studying all the world religions on my own. I chose not to get confirmed in the Catholic faith tradition. And then, I studied Buddhism—and holy shit, something finally made sense!

The principles of Buddhism would, from then on, guide my morality and personal ethics. I loved studying how Buddhism intersected with science. I became a quantum physics nerd around high school. By the time I went to college, I partied so hard that my interest in Buddhist philosophy took a back seat. I went about my early twenties, doing all the wild things. Around the time I moved to Kansas City for graduate school, my love of Buddhism and science rekindled. I’d go to the local library and devour book on spirituality, near-death experiences, and anything esoteric.

Fast forward six years to November 2024. I’d graduated from graduate school in 2021, had three years of being a solo private-practice therapist, and chose to expand to the current group practice n November of that year.

In late December 2024, my partner and I joined my family on a trip to Kenya to see my relatives and spend Christmas and New Year’s there. I’d been multiple time throughout my life, however, this time it just hit different. I felt more connected to my family, more connected to my ancestors, more connected to the land.

Upon our return in January 2025, I had an acupuncture appointment (I’d been doing acupuncture every two weeks for like a year—it’s fucking amazing). During that appointment, when I was left alone to lie with the needles, something I completely didn’t understand happened. Tingling began in my feet, heat rose through my feet and legs (I thought the heat lamp was on them—it wasn’t), movement and shaking and heat rose up my body, a tender, aching pain pulsed in my heart center, and it felt like a too-tight turtle neck was around my throat. I didn’t know what the fuck was happening, but I was scared, so it hurt. I felt like my hands were both tapping hard on the table. I saw up and looked—they were still. At this point I wanted to yell for my acupuncturist to come back in because I was scared. Instead, I figured that if this were happening, I may as well just fucking go with it. I rode the wave of somatic sensations, and eventually she came back in. I told her what happened and neither of us knew what had occured. She told me to reach out if anything weird happened after I left her office.

From there, I went to visit my good friend and therapist who I also knew was a Reiki master. I figured she’d believe me. I went to her house and told her about it. She said that maybe I had a heart center blockage and she handed me two heart shaped, palm-sized stones to hold—one green, one pink, and both from Sedona, Arizona. I held them for about four seconds before I realized they were burning in my hands. It felt like hot coals. I dropped them (thankfully they didn’t break!). I told her about the painful heat and she picked them up, feeling nothing. At this point, she told me she thought I needed more help, like real help, like a guide. She said I needed help figuring out what was going on with me.

Being the proactive person I’ve always been, I immediately started Googling “best Shaman in Kansas City”. Within two days, I had an in-person appointment booked. When I attended this appointment, oh my gosh I was so nervous. She welcomed me into her home/office space, brought me tea, and proceeded to confuse me by telling me that I’d had an “awakening”. I had no idea what she was talking about. Like, at all. She proceeded to give me handouts explaining the chakras of the body and how energy flows through the body. She said a bunch of things I didn’t undertand. She had me pull a card and I had no idea what was going on. She did a ritual on me using an egg to cleanse me from the distress and confusion. I went with it. I definitely wanted to not feel so destabilized. She taught me how to set up an altar when I got home.

So, to summarize the next eighteen months, I went through a frantic several months of absobing every esoteric thing and information I could find, bought a ridiculous amount of crystals and stones, developed a full and deeply personal altar and meditation space, developed a personal spritual practice intuitively that incorporated deep meditation with crystals and stones, tarot cards, and oracle cards. I attended a tarot-reading class, had multiple readings from various practitioners, and worked with several spiritual mentors individually and in group settings. I was all-in.

Between the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, my life (almost) completely fell apart, I went through a deeply painful Dark Night of the Soul, I deconstructed my egoic Self and had to reconstruct and integrate into a new, more aware iteration of myself, and have done months of therapy where my therapist guided me through deeply painful shadow work, inner child healing work, and IFS Parts work, leading me to where I am today—A deeply flawed human with a vast amount of tender loving-kindness and compassion for myself and all of my (mostly) integrated Parts, and a profound awarenss of the interconnectivity of all that is, all at once, and all that has ever been known within the universal consciousness (learning the physics behind these truths was a co-occuring practice).

Now, in 2026, I’ve experienced multiple awakening “unfoldings”, as I call them. They’re so fucking intense and I was scared when the first one happened (I thought an “awakening” was a one-and-done thing! My Kansas City Awakening Support Group laughed pretty hard when I said that!) but now each unfolding gets easier.

For about six months, I’ve felt called to somehow incorporate spirituality into my therapy work, as both are huge parts of my life. Funny enough, I stumbled upon the 2026 Revolutionary Practice Summit, held in Palm Springs, CA, the first week of May. There, I learned about how to ethically incorporate spiritual practices into clinical work, allowing me to both honor others’ spiritual beliefs and simultaneously practice ethical mental healthcare and therapeutic services. Now, this page of the website is born, and I’m so excited to now offer mental health therapy that incorporates spirituality, whatever that entails for that specific client, into my clinical work.

Searching for a Gay Therapist in KC? Meet Harry Green(he/him), MS, PLMFT, SMFT

As a gay therapist, I understand firsthand the beauty and challenges of moving through a world that often asks us to dim our light. My passion is creating a space where LGBTQIA+ individuals and relationships can feel fully seen, affirmed, and celebrated. In our work together, you won’t be asked to fit into outdated molds—you’ll be invited to explore, heal, and reclaim the authentic Self that has always been yours. Whether you’re navigating identity, relationships, or simply wanting a place where your whole Self is welcome, I’m here to walk alongside you with warmth, curiosity, and unwavering support.

I’m Here to Challenge You in the Most Caring Way Possible.

You’re not broken, and I’m not here to fix you. But I am here to help you explore the pattern of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships that are keeping you feeling stuck. Let’s work together to explore the aspects of your Self and your identity, to help you live your most vibrant and authentic life possible. And we might have some laughs along the way.

Queer existence is queer resistance.

Queer is more than a label for our gender or sexuality. To "queer" something is to be outside of the white, heteronomative, patriarchal scripts that have historically dominated society. I resonate with many of our fabulous queer theorists who recognized the radical potential of queerness for deconstruction and liberation of oppressive systems. Those narratives are internalized starting at such a young age, and they continue to impact how we show up for ourselves and others. I'd love to celebrate and explore your unique queer story.

  • You deserve a safe, accepting, and non-judgmental space to process hard things with your partner. You can freely express yourself without fear, because I will be there to provide support and facilitate healthy dialogue. We will practice healthy communication skills, and learn tools and techniques to engage in more healthy disagreements. Conflict isn’t the problem in relationships. It’s keeping the conflict healthy and constructive that becomes the challenge. I welcome that challenge, and I want to support you all in the process of learning to disagree in a more skillful and productive way.

  • Sometimes in relationships, intimacy is easy and instinctual in the beginning when we’re first excited to get to know each other. Over time, however, the mundane day-to-day life stressors can impede our ability to communicate in an intimate way, or even engage with each other sexually in a way that feels comfortable and safe. At Liz Davis Therapy, I am skilled in working with couples to re-connect with their intimacy and manage stress and conflict so that it doesn’t interfere with their sexual life. Is there a sexual desire difference? That’s ok! We can talk about it! I am trained and experienced in helping couples navigate through differences in sexual desire and differences in their desire for sexual frequency. We can navigate this, together.

  • Are you and your partner of different sexual orientations? That can feel like a major hurdle! But in my therapy room, I promise this is completely normal. I am skilled at assisting couples clients through navigating differences in sexual orientation. Not only do I have professional training in this, but I have the lived experience as well! I am a Queer (bisexual) woman partnered with a straight man. I understand and empathize with this experience, and I can help!

  • I am so incredibly passionate about helping couples strengthen their relationships. Is your relationship “good” or “fine”, but could be better? Don’t wait to pursue couples therapy!
